Roll it over to us
Roll it into a retirement account here. Get it in within 60 days and it is not taxed.
This is what the rest of this page is about.
Changed jobs, or left a plan behind? You have options for what to do with your old retirement savings. It can be a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), federal TSP or an IRA, from any institution.
Move it to a retirement account here and the tax you would otherwise owe is deferred. Get it in within 60 days and it is not taxed.
Once it arrives it is invested across a blend of our portfolios, all of them, in the proportions we manage to. There is no second decision to make, and no cash sitting idle.
Leaving the money where it is is one of them. Every option has a cost, and only one of them avoids tax now.

If you have a new employer, their plan may accept the money as a plan-to-plan transfer.
We do not open 401(k) accounts, so this one is arranged with your new plan rather than with us.
The money becomes yours to spend, and it is taxable income. If you are under 59½ there is usually a further 10% on top.
The one option that cannot be undone.

Rolling a plan that has not been taxed into a Roth account is a conversion. A conversion is taxable on the amount converted.
Consider all your options, including the tax implications, the fees and the expenses, before moving money between accounts.
Inside 60 days
Money you have received from a retirement plan is a distribution until it is redeposited. Get it into a retirement account within 60 days of taking it, and it keeps the treatment it had.
After 60 days
Redeposit it late and the money is treated as a distribution you took. That is taxable income, and if you are under 59½ a further 10% on top. We cannot undo that by accepting the transfer afterwards.
A plan may require a payment to you before it releases the rest. That payment — a required minimum distribution — is taxable and cannot be rolled over.
The paragraphs above describe how the mechanism works.
They are not tax advice, and this page cannot know your circumstances.
If a plan withheld tax when it paid you, you have to replace that withheld amount from your own funds.
Only then does the whole sum stay inside the retirement account.
Take advice on your own position.
Step one
Create your account and complete the required information to establish your retirement investment profile.
Step two
Make a contribution to your retirement account through the available funding options. Your contribution is recorded against your account and reflected in your investment balance.
Step three
Your contributions are invested according to your selected retirement strategy. You can monitor your portfolio, contributions, allocation, and performance as your retirement savings grow over time.
A retirement account holds a blend of the portfolios below. That is all of them, in the proportions we manage to, rather than any one of them. It carries the same published weights and the same fees, and opening one adds no charge of its own.

Each portfolio publishes its price history and the range it is aiming for. The figures come from the same valuations that value a customer's account.
What you read is what we manage to, which is the only kind of record worth printing.
